So what’s it like to get all the way to the very edge of obscurity? To be, you know, almost famous? Dean Wareham is one of those rare geniuses who know the answer to that question. Dean was the force behind Galaxie 500, one of the best bands you’ve never heard. Their pared-down, raw sound made Galaxie 500 a trailblazer in the 80s — to many, much more than a mere footnote in the annals of east coast indie rock lore. Galaxie 500’s sudden 1991 break-up spun Dean into Luna, and the other two members, Damon and Naomi into, well, Damon and Naomi. These days Dean is mostly touring with ex-Luna bassist Britta Phillips, but he’s taken the time to chronicle his adventure to the edge of fame in the indie rock underground. Penguin Books describes Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance as “absurdly rich in rewards for anyone who was ever in a band or just took an interest in indie music over the past twenty years.” Awesome.

Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance will be released on March 13, 2008, but you can pre-order your copy from the most rockin’ local bookstore, Brookline Booksmith (279 Harvard St, Brookline MA, 617-566-6660). Order online, or buy it in person on Thursday, March 20th, when Dean Wareham himself visits the store to read from Black Postcards and sign copies of this promising book. The booksigning is at 7pm, but you best get there early.

These Familiar Days presents a familiar departure for steadfast Boston singer Max Heinegg. Those who knew Max’’s first band, The High Ceilings, (in which, yes, I had a cup of coffee on bass) could sense that quieter elements were percolating under the surface of the bombast. 2004’’s By June came closer to realizing those Nick Drake and Neil Young influences. With this latest release, Max takes yet-another step away from psychedelic-emo-band-leader toward folk-rocker poet. What is surprising is the depth of new instrumental color, namely keys and sax, which appear here. I’’m not sure it all works: the playing of Morphine sax player Dana Colley feels like something of a paste-on afterthought. Then again, if I had Dana Colley available, I’’d probably use him too. The keyboard work of Maclain Diemer, Jason Dunn and the organ of Ian Kennedy is quite effective, and Ian’’s string arrangements and playing are gorgeous. Max’’s singularly haunting voice is in fine form, if a bit less expansive than in the past, and his poetry-as-lyric craft is profound. These Familiar Days finds Max Heinegg continuing to follow new sonic paths. Future releases should end up in intriguing destinations. (Brian Westbye)

Everything old is new again. Something Unknown will remain in your juke for some time to come, thanks to the waves of nostalgia it induces and the modernist directions that nostalgia rides off in. Singer Leah Callahan is a Boston vet with a varied body of work on the books. (Turkish Delight, Betwixt, et al.) Her experience filters those old Joy Division and Missing Persons influences into a set of sharply crafted nouveau-Brit nouveau wave that keeps pace with the Foo Fighters and U2. Guitarist Joel Cohen and drummer Allen Esser handle every turn, from flat-out to angular and dissonant, to dreamy and pensive. The playing is tight, the mix is great and Leah’’s seductive voice pulls you in. (And you don’t complain.) There are many moods on Something Unknown, and all are worth exploring.

There are several ways to approach The Wheel: listen to enjoy, listen to hear strong components, or listen to know what could be done a little better. Jennifer Matthews is a fierce talent, a folk chanteuse that can rock with definitive conviction. She is also an apt songsmith with a full toolbox at her disposal. Layers of crisp acoustic guitars and snarling electrics are informed by tasteful placement of baritone guitar and mandolin and organ, painting a sonic landscape owing as much to Zeppelin III as P.J. Harvey. This great work, however, is almost obscured by a mix that’s often too over processed for the material, and there is some serious buzz and hiss in spots. Jennifer has a great voice, but her whisper tracks almost get too close to phone sex: just watch out, all I’’m sayin’’. One major and one minor nit to pick ain’’t too bad, though. I’’m sure this is killer live material, and I look forward to hearing more on “record”. All approaches lead to a great listen. (Brian Westbye)
