There are several ways to approach The Wheel: listen to enjoy, listen to hear strong components, or listen to know what could be done a little better. Jennifer Matthews is a fierce talent, a folk chanteuse that can rock with definitive conviction. She is also an apt songsmith with a full toolbox at her disposal. Layers of crisp acoustic guitars and snarling electrics are informed by tasteful placement of baritone guitar and mandolin and organ, painting a sonic landscape owing as much to Zeppelin III as P.J. Harvey. This great work, however, is almost obscured by a mix thatÂ’s often too over processed for the material, and there is some serious buzz and hiss in spots. Jennifer has a great voice, but her whisper tracks almost get too close to phone sex: just watch out, all IÂ’’m sayinÂ’’. One major and one minor nit to pick ainÂ’’t too bad, though. I’Â’m sure this is killer live material, and I look forward to hearing more on “record”. All approaches lead to a great listen. (Brian Westbye)
